Stephen Alltop, Music Director and Conductor
Celebrating his 12th year as Music Director and Conductor, Stephen Alltop was named “Conductor of the Year” by the Illinois Council of Orchestras in 2022 in recognition of his outstanding leadership of the Champaign-Urbana Symphony Orchestra and his many contributions to the Champaign-Urbana musical community. He has an expansive musical career as a conductor, performer, and educator. Stephen conducts both orchestral and choral ensembles and serves as Music Director of the Apollo Chorus of Chicago and the Elmhurst Symphony Orchestra. Dr. Alltop has been a member of Northwestern University’s conducting and keyboard faculties since 1994, where he teaches and conducts the Alice Millar Chapel Choir and Baroque Music Ensemble.
Stephen has an active performance career as well. He has appeared with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra as both a harpsichord and organ soloist, and performs frequently with Chicago’s Music of the Baroque. He has performed with Boston’s Handel and Haydn Society, the Joffrey Ballet, Chicago Bach Project, Chicago Sinfonietta, Lyric Opera of Chicago, Grant Park Symphony Orchestra, Ravinia Festival, and other orchestras in the USA and Italy. Maestro Alltop has also been a guest conductor of numerous orchestras and choruses across the United States, Europe, and Korea.
