A native of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Jebat Kee is Principal Conductor of the University of Illinois Philharmonia Orchestra and Assistant Conductor of the Champaign-Urbana Symphony Orchestra. He has also conducted the University of Illinois Symphony Orchestra and has served as Assistant Conductor of the Illinois Lyric Theatre’s production of Puccini’s La Bohème. Jebat was Assistant Conductor of the Campanile Orchestra at Rice University, and has worked with the String Orchestra of Brooklyn, Ossia New Music Ensemble, and the Empire Film Music Ensemble, of which he was Co-Artistic Director. Jebat has participated in master classes with Osmo Vänskä and Tito Muñoz, premiered orchestral and chamber works of faculty and student composers, and conducted various ad hoc ensembles.
As a violist, Jebat has performed extensively across four continents, in concert halls such as Carnegie Hall, Sydney Opera House, Suntory Hall, Laeiszhalle Hamburg, and Esplanade Concert Hall, to name a few. Jebat has performed with orchestras such as the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra, Charleston Symphony Orchestra, Sinfonia da Camera, Mercury: The Orchestra Redefined, and the New York String Orchestra. Additionally, he was selected as a winner of the YouTube Symphony Orchestra 2011. Active also in chamber music, Jebat has collaborated with artists such as James Dunham, Jon Kimura Parker, Mikhail Kopelman, Kathleen Winkler, and Thomas Jaber. Jebat was Principal Viola of KINETIC, a conductorless chamber ensemble based in Houston. Jebat’s summer festival appearances as a violist include the Tanglewood Music Center, Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival, Pacific Music Festival, Spoleto Festival USA, Aspen Music Festival and School, and Caroga Lake Music Festival. As a strong advocate for the performance of new music, Jebat has performed with ensembles such as Musiqa, Da Camera of Houston, Loop38, Hear and Now, and the Ossia New Music Ensemble.
Jebat is currently pursuing a Master of Music degree in Orchestral Conducting at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, under the tutelage of Donald Schleicher. His previous conducting teachers include Larry Rachleff and Brad Lubman. Jebat completed a Master of Music degree in Viola Performance at the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University, where he studied with James Dunham, in addition to serving as his teaching assistant. He received a Bachelor of Music in Viola Performance from the Eastman School of Music under the tutelage of Carol Rodland.
